Tiffany & Co. is the most famous American jewellery house and, for vintage collectors, a category unto itself. The vintage market sharply distinguishes between periods and guest designers within this house, with each category having its own collector groups. Brief historical context

Tiffany & Co. was founded in New York in 1837 and grew to become the leading American silver and jewellery house in the late nineteenth century. Early twentieth-century work under Louis Comfort Tiffany plays a key role in American art nouveau — see our art nouveau guide.

In the second half of the twentieth century, the house worked with a series of prominent guest designers whose work is collected separately in the vintage market. For Dutch owners, mid-century and later work is more common; early twentieth-century American work is rarer in Europe.

The United States does not have a mandatory government hallmarking system; American pieces typically bear only a fineness mark (STERLING, 14K, 18K, PLAT) plus the brand name. Original box, tag, and invoice directly influence marketability. For top pieces, the house can conduct archive research upon request; the outcome is a substantial part of the trade value.

Reproductions and imitations

Popular designs from the second half of the twentieth century are frequently copied. Sloppy setting work, anomalous weight, and unknown signature patterns are signals. Verification always goes through an independent appraiser with specific experience; photos alone are never conclusive.
