Learning to read hallmarks

The inside of a ring or the back of a brooch is a small archive. Four countries, four hallmark traditions — and an interactive finder that leads you to the right in-depth guide in two steps.

Every determination of a vintage jewel starts with the mark. Before you look at the form, the cut of the diamond or the clasp, a legible mark tells you in which country a piece was assayed, of which metal it was made and — for a number of assay systems — even in which year it passed through the assay office. Whoever recognises the main European traditions can place a jewel in time and origin within seconds.

What a mark does prove is limited and precise. A fineness mark says that the metal met the statutory standard at the moment of assay. No more, no less. A mark says nothing about the age of the design, nothing about the quality of any stones, and nothing about the originality of parts added later. How to read a hallmark combination

  1. 1

    Find the fineness mark

    Look for a number in thousandths (375, 585, 750, 925, 800) or a figurative sign. It gives the purity of the metal.

    Read the assay mark

    The assay mark (lion, eagle's head, small sword, Minerva, half-moon) identifies the country and the assaying authority.

    Locate the date letter

    In British, Dutch and Scandinavian systems: a single letter in a small shield indicates the year of assay.

    Identify the maker's mark

    Initials or a symbol in a small frame (square, oval or lozenge) refer to the goldsmith or atelier.

A concrete example: inside a gold Dutch ring you find 750 (18 carat), a small assay mark, the date letter V in a shield and the initials H.M. in a square. Within ten seconds you know: 18 carat gold, assayed in the Netherlands in the corresponding year, made by master H.M.

The Dutch assay system works with four marks: fineness, responsibility mark of the maker or importer, date letter and office mark. Before 1953 figurative (small swords for gold, lion's head or Minerva for silver), afterwards simplified to fineness in thousandths. The statutory weight threshold explains why small work may be unmarked; two designated assay offices verify pieces when in doubt.

Recognise & date

The most complete assay system in the world. Four fixed elements — fineness mark, assay office (leopard's head London, anchor Birmingham, rose Sheffield, castle Edinburgh), date letter and sponsor's mark — allow exact dating. Typically British finenesses are 9ct (375) and 22ct (916). Chester and Glasgow, now closed, still turn up on antique work.

Recognise & date

The famous animal heads: eagle's head (tête d'aigle) for 18 carat gold, Minerva for silver, Mercury head and swan for platinum. French marks are extremely small and often placed in hidden corners — look inside clasps and on the back of ring shanks. No date letter: dating runs through style and the maker's mark in a lozenge (gold) or oval (silver).

Germany, Austria & beyond

Recognise & date

Half-moon and crown for German silver (from 1888), combined with fineness in thousandths. Austria uses the Diana head for silver and the A-head or Toucan for gold. Switzerland, Scandinavia (Swedish three crowns) and Russia (kokoshnik profile with zolotnik fineness) each have their own figurative marks. The United States has no compulsory assay system — only fineness plus maker's name.

Pitfalls

Common reading mistakes

1. Mistaking 585 for a year

Number marks like 375, 585, 750, 925 are fineness indications in thousandths. They resemble years but emphatically are not. 585 is 14 carat, not a ring from the year 585. Four- or five-digit marks with a dot or dash (e.g. 19.24) are also not years but usually serial or atelier numbers.

2. Confusing a maker's mark with a brand signature

A maker's mark in a small square or oval is the goldsmith's registration with the assay office — a mandatory administrative mark. A brand signature (Cartier, Boucheron, Bulgari) is a large, decoratively placed engraving. What you look for for collector's value is the brand signature; the maker's mark is only relevant for dating and country.

3. Reading a worn mark as 'no mark'

Old marks wear from decades of wear. Photograph in macro mode under raking light; contours then emerge as shadow. For borderline cases a jeweller can read the mark under a high-magnification microscope.

4. Pseudo-marks on reproductions

Later reproductions sometimes carry marks that look genuine but deviate slightly. A mark you cannot find in the standard registers of the assay offices is a strong warning sign. What if there is no mark?

Absence of a mark is not proof of inauthenticity. It is a reason to look at other determination points. For the full set of home checks — plus their limits — see recognising real gold at home.

When home observations don't give a clear answer, an XRF measurement at a specialist jeweller is the most reliable route. XRF (X-ray fluorescence) is non-destructive and measures the exact metal percentage in fifteen seconds. What does 585 mean on a ring?

585 stands for 14 carat gold — the alloy contains 58.5% pure gold, made up with copper, silver or other metals. In the Netherlands and Germany this has been the common standard for gold wedding and engagement rings since the early twentieth century.

How old is my jewel based on the mark?

A mark can only be dated in systems with date letters (particularly British, Dutch and some Scandinavian systems). Consult the official registers of the assay office in question for the exact cycle. Without a date letter, the combination of mark type, country and jewel style gives a period estimate of roughly one decade.

Is 925 always genuine silver?

925 is sterling silver — 92.5% pure silver. When the mark is combined with a country-specific assay mark (Dutch Minerva sword, British lion passant, French Minerva head) it is almost always genuine. Standalone 925 marks without an assay mark do appear on imitations too.

Is an unmarked jewel real gold?

Not automatically no. Small or thin pieces fell below the statutory weight threshold and did not have to be assayed. Early nineteenth-century and Bohemian work is often unmarked too. For certainty an XRF test at a jeweller is the way to go — fast, free or cheap, and fully non-destructive.
